American Culture

The American Culture is a mix of everything.  We do not have just one culture at all.  It started with the English coming and then everyone else started coming as well.  Now, Latin America is coming to the USA.  Every time a new culture comes the citizens that reside in America do not want it.  Starting with the English and Indians, to the Irish and Italians coming, and like I said earlierthe Latin Americans.  Our culture is everyone else’s culture.  America is a mix of everything.  I hate to see racism and hate for other cultures because America does not have a set culture so it can not make fun of other cultures.

Today the world uses toxic pesticides and air pollutants to better themselves.  Nature should be left alone

to be itself.  I love to walk in my woods and see the animals, water and vegetation.  Pesticideskill the weeds

that are just a part of nature and should be left alone or pulled, not sprayed by toxic pesticides.  The

pesticides kills animals as well.  The animals eat the plants sprayed by the pesticides and become sick and

sometimes die from the toxins inside the pesticides.  Also humans are effected as well.  We use pestiscides

and then breath them all in making us sick.  In the future that enviroment will be polluted if we do not slow

or stop the amount of toxins produced.

This passage is a very intriging and interesting thoughts and facts.  People are working for extremely

low wages in third world countries.  They have no union to fight against the factories.  No one will stand

up because the workers because the workers are mostly young women that can not fight against the

factories bouncers.  These people work in assemble lines for only a few dollars a day.  The days are usually

long and without much break time.  I believe the companies should be making the factors pay there

workers more money.  I can not stand that the fact that barley nothing is being done for these workers.

The presentation on this topic was very creative and funny because of Manny’s humor.  I like the Jeopardy game but I think it would have been better if we were play after the presentation was over.  I liked Manny’s movie, I think I have seen part of it before and would like to see the rest.  He was not joking when he said it was hard to understand.   I liked the presentation for its humor and creativity but it lacked in knowledge.  There was never a dull moment and I had fun.  There is one thing I did not like about the presentation though.  I mostly knew about everything they talked about.  I wanted to learn more about the women’s problems or struggles they might still have. They may have written about many interesting facts in their papers that I would have liked to here more about.

1.  What is it like to move from Jordan to America?  What was the biggest change?

2. What are the parties like in Jordan?  Do they have parties like us with Rap and Hip-hop and alcohol or with their traditional music with dance?

3. Do think that it is true how women are portrayed to be lower than men in Jordan and other middle eastern countries?

4. Is Jordan most like Muslim or is it a mix of Jews and christains also?

The Next President

For the next president I believe he should be a male and to have an intelligent cabinet.   He should be able to answer almost any question about our past foreign policies and say what he would have done in the situation.   If he can do this than he can answer many of the up and coming problems in the world.    Along with foreign policy I want the new president to make sure that gun control never happens, health care stays privatized and to help the economy.    Many people do not know it but people in Canada, which has a socialized health plan, have to wait months and sometimes years to recieve a lifesaving surgery because their are not enough doctors.   The doctors are limited in Canada because no one wants to go through all the work to become a doctor and work as hard as one and not get paid as much as they should.

This is a very interesting article.   I never really thought about it but it is very true that student are very apathetic today.   My generation is very different from 60s and 70s.   I think that many students in my generation do not care to protest or argue for the their rights but I also believe that there is not much to argue about for young college students.   The only thing I could think of is the right to drink alcohol or to lower the amount of police arrests.   Perfectly good students that obey the rules and are on the Dean’s List have fun on the weekends and get caught drinking underage.   They just went out to have some fun but end up paying for a fine and losing their driver’s license for a little bit.   This is the only good protest or argument that the students of today would involved in.

After reading Alkman Grantitsas, “Americans Are Tuning Out the World” it made me realize how self-absorbed our country really is. When I watch the news on the television I usually do not care about other countries problems. I care about the economy and anything that effects me. This is the way out country is. Only in the past four years has anyone really cared about what was going on in some other country. This is only because the Iraq war was and is such a con-traversal event.
I like how Grantitsas said that 16% of students in 1965 studied other languages compared to 8.6% now. English maybe the most known second language of the world and is known as the business language but that does not mean that Spanish or French can be learned. Spanish is the most common language and French is the second. I also thought that it was interesting that students study aboard much less than they used too. I have thought about studying aboard and I think it would be a fun and amazing experience.
Grantitsas said that Americans are tuning out the world. As I said earlier, I totally agree. Not many people did much about the Asian Tsunami, SARS, the bird flu, and the mad cow disease.
I believe that we as Americans should pay more attention to foreign affairs especially because of globalism. With quicker and better communication today there is no reason we as a country should not be involved or at least know what is going on in other countries.

Nike Outsourcing Jobs

    A.  I believe that Nike is a great shoe but I do not like their why of making the shoe.  Their factories are in China and Vietnam and their workers are cheaply paid.  My view of Nike has not changed but I feel that they should pay their workers more.

  1. They Nike model effects the U.S. because the other countries like Nike are outsourcing all of their jobs else where to be about to pay their workers less.  This is a product of globalization that should be stopped.  Jobs are being lost to other countries and cheaply paying the workers in other countries.
  2. I like the idea of working at McDonalds.  It is a good first job as a teenager.  It teaches them about the work life and service.  I do not believe that it is a good job for adults though because it does not pay well.  McDonalds should not have to pay their workers much thought.  It is not a difficult job to do.

Foreign Film Review

This past weekend I watched three foreign films that help me to realize the culture change throughout time.  The story set place in Taiwan.  Each story was from a different time period.  They all were love stories using the same two actors.

The idea of the story was great but the actual making of the movie was not.  The movies were very slow and complicating to understand.  The first story was set up in the 1940s-1950s era.  The girl was a pool girl and the man was a soldier in the war.  She leaves her old pool house and goes to another and the soldier has to find her.  I thought the picture was very bad and the plot was horrible.  The second story was set in 1911 when women and men rarely showed affection.  I could not understand this story because it was a silent film and there was practically no plot, not to mention there was an annoying girl singing and playing some sort of guitar-like instrument that was horrible.  The second story was set in 2005.  It was about a lesbian having a love affair with a man.  This story was a little different because I could relate to this.  It was in modern times and had a better plot than the other films.

Although the films were long and hard to sit through I learned a lot about Taiwanese culture.  In a way there culture has grown just like ours.  Each time period could be related to us at the same time period.  I realize now that other countries grow just like we do and have the same type problems.
