This past weekend I watched three foreign films that help me to realize the culture change throughout time. The story set place in Taiwan. Each story was from a different time period. They all were love stories using the same two actors.
The idea of the story was great but the actual making of the movie was not. The movies were very slow and complicating to understand. The first story was set up in the 1940s-1950s era. The girl was a pool girl and the man was a soldier in the war. She leaves her old pool house and goes to another and the soldier has to find her. I thought the picture was very bad and the plot was horrible. The second story was set in 1911 when women and men rarely showed affection. I could not understand this story because it was a silent film and there was practically no plot, not to mention there was an annoying girl singing and playing some sort of guitar-like instrument that was horrible. The second story was set in 2005. It was about a lesbian having a love affair with a man. This story was a little different because I could relate to this. It was in modern times and had a better plot than the other films.
Although the films were long and hard to sit through I learned a lot about Taiwanese culture. In a way there culture has grown just like ours. Each time period could be related to us at the same time period. I realize now that other countries grow just like we do and have the same type problems.
Good job John – great summary and the last paragraph is good analysis. In future reviews, make sure to focus more on what is effective / ineffective, and what we learn about culture from the movie. Still, good! Thanks! +3 on your paper.
